Deathwitch: Dawn of armageddon

If I had been into black metal at the age of eleven, there’s a chance that I would have started a band, which I would have named something along the lines of Deathwitch. If I had, in turn, been eleven years old during the mid-nineties, when (it seems) every idiot with corpsepaint and a leather jacket could get a record contract, I would perhaps released an album called “Dawn of Armageddon”.

On this album I might very well have included songs with titles such as “Jehova Shall Bleed”, “Angel Execution”, “Blasphemous Desecration” or “Evil Blood”. I would proceed to write lyrics such as:

Satanic blood in their veins
cold eyes of hate
Grim unholy weapons
Satanic crusade can begin

or, why not:

Everybody is possessed
by tremendous lust
Naked bodies fuck
Sodomy in every sight

I would also include the following message in the booklet:

“Fuck off to all the “evil” kids who play troll, forest, wood, frost…… shit “black” metal!!! Arrrgggghhhh!!! You destroy the underground scene, die!!! You will be crushed by the fist of real fucking black death metal!”

And then boldly state:

“PRIMITIVE FUCKING BLACK DEATH METAL!”

To top it all of, I would include some guy with a penis instead of a head on the album cover…

Seriously, WHAT THE FUCK?

The worst thing is that the actual MUSIC is not that awful, and it’s safe to say that it never reaches a Xasthur level of suckage. The problem is that Deathwitch decided to throw in almost an hour’s worth of material of, well, varying quality. Also the vocals are absolute ass. It says in the booklet that there are two different black metal trolls doing vocals on “Dawn of Armageddon”, and I really can’t tell them apart. Know this though, they do both perform fellatio.

The production, while being bad, is way better than one would expect. I kinda like my black metal a little rough around the edges, so this is another aspect of the album that gets my approval (just barely, though). The guitars sound fuzzy and decent and the bass is actually very easy to hear, kudos! The drums are a bit of a different story though as it might just as well be somebody banging a table with a lot of pots and pans on it. I guess the playing is okay, though.

As I’m writing this, apparently Deathwitch has decided that it doesn’t want to be a black metal caricature anymore, and declared itself dead. Almost every member this band has ever had now plays in Runemagick, and while I am not very familiar with them, rumor says that they are a decent band. Not very surprising as, like I mentioned, this album shows some potential.

“Dawn of Armageddon” would have been a pretty great album if Deathwitch would have changed their moronic concept and cut the length in half, saving the best riffs. They would also have to get another vocalist, and a production from Necromorbus Studios.

Nobody should ever care about this shit.
